My tip for picking up bargains is to check out auction web sites which offer goods for a penny – it’s surprising what you can pick up. Many ebay sellers, for example, start auctions at one penny to try and attract bids and keep costs down. A proportion of these auctions, for many different reasons, dip under the radar and remain unsold! One useful site I’ve found is Pennyshopper.co.uk – select, say, the Clothing category, it’s really surprising what sells for a penny, including some designer gear.

These are great tips. It saddens me that our economy seems to be based on a “spend spend spend” philosophy. Excess seems to be the rule. Personally, I think that if people – and our government! – need to go into debt to sustain coveted economic “growth”, then we’re not only missing the boat, we’re going to sink it.

My American friends are the only people I know who consistently go out for breakfast (apart from a few construction workers who start at 8am!)… I was amazed when I visited a friend’s family and they hadn’t even turned the oven on in 3 years in the property!

It’s a nice lifestyle while it lasts, but as you say the reckoning may be hard.
